An Authentic Life Pt.1My brother in-law years ago told my sister that he had been living in lies for so long that he had lost

himself and vowed to her that he would begin to create An Authentic Life.

1) What is an Authentic Life?

Being authentic means living in harmony from a place deep within. It is when our actions and words are

in alignment with our beliefs and values. It is being our true selves, not an imitation of what we think we

should be or have been told we should be. There is no “should” in authentic. No living in the past.

Part of knowing ourselves is knowing what we believe in.  Gail Saltz, M.D. in her book, BECOMING REAL,

Defeating the Stories We Tell Ourselves That Hold Us Back, (Berkley Publishing 2004) states that

throughout our childhoods we are picking up messages that become part of our belief system. Left

unchallenged, we can walk around thinking that these beliefs are our own. Part of finding our authentic

self is sorting through these beliefs to find out which are truly our own. Are they beliefs that come from

a mature, healthy, grounded place within us, or are they remnants from our childhood, coming from an

insecure place?

Living Authentic can seem so hippie, guru, communal type mumbo gumbo but if you are not living your

own life in harmony or authentically, then you are not really living YOUR LIFE, but rather a manufactured

altered life that is being manipulated by your environment. You have lost control over you. You are not

in the driver’s seat of your own journey.

In 2012 I had my AHA MOMENT and realized that I wanted to live a life that was focused on Thriving, not

existing. I wanted to honestly respond to the question, “How are you?” with, “I’m Great!”  I have moved

to a new place and as I journey into this new life of Thriving, I will document through blogs like this what

I am learning along the way.

This is the end of the 1st half of this post, See the 2nd half for suggestions on how to begin creating An

Authentic Life.
