When I moved from Bountiful to St. George I was able to do a lot of traveling, walking / hiking all over this beautiful world of ours. However, when I moved from St. George to Maui for employment, I spent 6 days a week in the office for 13-16 hour days. I began running on the beach, paddle boarding, adding tennis and golf to the routine the last few months of my routine in Paradise. But a regular exercise routine had been out of my day for too long to be very effective in my weight management. I lost 10 lbs over 6 weeks.
When I returned to Utah a few months ago, I knew what I had to do to get back my healthy state of mind; I had to get a regular, maintenance level of exercise in place.
I started back to the gym of my life before, attending group classes, then added online exercise videos every day with a focus on a different area of the body for each day of the week.
Tuesday: Legs & Glutes
Wednesday: Arms, Back and Shoulders
Friday: Endurance, whole body strength & cardio
Saturday: a hike or other exercise outdoors
After no weight loss and some strength, and endurance returning I had the opportunity to up my game with a 30 day Bootcamp Challenge at O.Zone Fitness in Sandy with Shayne Scruggs. This was AWESOME and I was there everyday, 5 days a week for 4 weeks, even at 5:30 am on some days, because my schedule was not going to allow me to do a sane time frame exercise that particular day. Shayne’s workouts were intense 30 minute focused routines. I loved that it was a hard core 30 minute workout and that he offered several various time slots for getting it done during weekdays.
I saw a great change in my body during these 30 days, but no weight loss.
Six weeks ago, I joined John Madsen Performance at Excel Fitness in Holladay for a Six Week Challenge, meeting MWF for a 60 minute routines, mostly a full body strength training workout. Some mornings I was awake at 3:45 am to get into the gym for a 5 a.m. class, other days 7:30 pm leaving the gym at 9 pm.
This time around I had nutrition guidance and a strict calorie diet to follow. At the end of the 5 weeks, (last Saturday) I had lost 1 lb of fat and gained noticeable muscle tone. I will show photos at the end of this week showing the Before and After.
I am still not where I want to be in my body weight, but the changes overall have been remarkable and I thank God & Heaven for the body I have that will put up with the challenges I put it through.
The real battle is in the mental state of mind, getting to the inner voice that says, I am an Athlete. Associating myself in this way affects my daily behavior and choices, in a positive way.
No matter where you are in your life regarding your Health and Weight, you can take up the Challenge to Improve. The reward is not the Destination, but the Journey.
I am thrilled that I am on The Journey!

(side note: I had a School Reunion in all of this challenge, and I was after the “Holy Shit” response. Yeah, it happened.)
