Most physicians will deal with your illness or poor health by prescribing a prescription, or excuse your issues with a “that’s to be expected at your age”. But what if there was a guiding principle to address most poor health issues?
Think of it this way; you are on a walk and pick up a sticker in your sock or along the edge of the shoe near your ankle. It is rubbing on your skin and becoming very distracting and somewhat painful. Do you stop walking, remove your shoe and sock to find the culprit and remove it? Or, do you keep walking thinking “I’ll just deal with it when I get home and use painkillers, antibiotic ointment and a bandage, if needed, for a couple days.
It seems like a no-brainer to just stop and remove the pricking pest before it causes some real damage, but most people will treat a health issue as just this, until it becomes a real problem that requires medical attention, surgery or more evasive treatments.
What is “Lifestyle Medicine or Principles”? It is adopting the discipline that you, not fate, is responsible for your health. And you care enough about you that you take control and be cognizant of the areas of your life that will affect your lifestyle.
It may be nothing more than just paying attention to four areas of your life;
Nutrition- Eat whole foods, grains, plant based items that are naturally low in fat and sugars, high in flavor. Think, “does the earth provide this or did it come from a lab/warehouse food processed?”
Exercise- Don’t think heavy lifting or major lifestyle changes like prepping for a triathlon here; simply start moving and walking more. Park father from the door and walk more during breaks in the office. Use the stairs, not the escalators or elevators when you can. Moderate exercise four times a week for 20-30 minutes will make a difference in undoing risk of disease.
Relaxation- Seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night and be willing to take ten to fifteen minute naps during the day when needed. Ten minute or longer, Meditation, four to six times a week would go a long way towards reducing stress and improving health. Gentle alignment or breathing yoga will aid in teaching skills to deal with prolonged stress or sitting, which has been proven to cause numerous chronic diseases.
Love- Feeling love, appreciation, support, encouragement and having intimacy in your life will help keep you healthy People that are lonely, depressed and un-touched are three to ten times more likely to get sick.
Address the underlying causes of illness before, or as soon as you see the signs, to keep you in your best self for the coming year(s).
Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, “The First Wealth is Health”.
Those who have no time for healthy eating will sooner or later have to find time for illness. Edward Stanley
